Slovenia becomes CERN 25th Member State

Slovenia and CERN have been collaborating closely for more than 30 years, and we are proud that the work of the high-energy physics community has been recognised and honoured. Our photodetector laboratory is involved in the design of the Upgrades LHCb particle identification detectors RICH and TORCH, as well as the DRD4, Collaboration on Photon detectors and Particle Identification techniques. With this formal step, we… Read More »Slovenia becomes CERN 25th Member State

Physics in Ljubljana 2024

On July 3rd and 4th, the Photodetector lab hosted the participants of the summer school Physics in Ljubljana 2024 (http://physicsinljubljana.fmf.uni-lj.si/). 23 bachelor’s and master’s degree students of physics from Europe and the Balkan region were presented with cutting-edge physics research conducted by the Photon detector group, and interesting details of experimental work were shared.

CERN 70

CERN celebrates 70 years of existence.  A rich celebration program will let the public celebrate CERN’s illustrious past and engage with its bright future. Our activities are closely connected to CERN, and we are very happy to celebrate this jubilee. One of our missions is also transferring instrumentation knowledge from High Energy Physics to Medical Imaging. Take a look at the inspiring event organized at… Read More »CERN 70

International Masterclasses 2024

Outreach – International Masterclasses in particle physics 2024 were held at the Jozef Stefan Institute on March 5. https://indico.ijs.si/event/1830/ . High school students were engaged in analyzing the real data collected at CERN and KEK laboratories by ATLAS and Belle II and familiarized with tools for cancer treatment planning employing x-rays, protons, or carbon ions Particle Therapy. The event was organized in collaboration with IPPOG… Read More »International Masterclasses 2024

ECFA DRD4 Constitution and Solid State Photon Detectors Leadership

The Photon detector group is one of the founding groups of the Collaboration on the Research and Development for Photon Detectors and Particle Identification Techniques (DRD4), which has been constituted by 76 research groups from 20 countries to coordinate the detector research and development activities for the next generation of particle physics experiments until 2045. The formation of the collaboration was coordinated by Professor Peter… Read More »ECFA DRD4 Constitution and Solid State Photon Detectors Leadership

Visit of the President of the EIC Board

On November 22, 2023 Michiel Scheffer. President of the Board of the European Innovation Council (EIC) and Principal Adviser in the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation visited the JSI and the researchers of the PetVision project. He was welcomed by the JSI Director, Prof. Dr. Boštjan Zalar, Prof. Dr. Peter Križan, and Prof. Dr. Samo Korpar, showing him current activities in our photodetector lab.

CherPET takes off

CherPET, a Proof-of-Concept ERC-funded project devoted to development of a novel ultra-fast detector module for Positron Emission Tomography based on Cherenkov radiation, has successfully started. The paradigm shift in medicine from the treatment of acute or advanced disease to very early diagnosis and even prevention in cancer, as well as in personalized treatment, puts more stringent requirements on positron-emission (PET) imaging both in terms of… Read More »CherPET takes off

PetVision project started

PetVision consortium, consisting of seven project partners from Europe and the US started to work on a project where the novel PET imager will be constructed and validated. The long-term aim of the project is the spread of the enabling technology throughout the world, making the PET imaging technique accessible to health systems to diagnose cancer at its early stages. More info at the project… Read More »PetVision project started
